Taiwan's July exports plunge 11.6%
Shrinking overseas demand for information technology and telecom products led to a year-on-year decline of 11.6 percent in Taiwan's export in July, the government said Tuesday.
The $24.9 billion fall was a fifth consecutive monthly drop in the island's exports. It was led by a 20.0 percent fall in exports to the United States, the finance ministry said in a statement.
Shipments to Europe declined 14.4 percent while those to China, the island's biggest overseas market, were down 11.0 percent, it said.
The weak demand for Taiwan's telecom items was reflected in leading smartphone maker HTC's worse-than-expected 45 percent slump in July sales from the previous year, according to sales figures released by the company.
The island's export totaled $171.65 billion in the seven months to July, down 5.8 percent from a year ago.
Taiwan's trade-reliant economy has shown signs of weakness in recent months due to falling demand from its key markets China, Japan and the United States.
The economy dropped 0.16 percent in the second quarter of 2012, the first quarterly contraction since 2009, according to the government.

Triple champion Chen quits as China's aura fades
Three-time Olympic champion Chen Yibing announced his retirement from gymnastics on Monday, on a day when China's iron grip on the sport was weakened once again.
Dominant on home soil in Beijing four years ago, when they won nine of the 14 gymnastics gold medals at stake, China have occasionally looked a pale imitation of themselves in London.
Despite victories for the men's team and for Zou Kai in the men's floor exercise, China have seen their other Olympic titles wrenched from their grasp one by one.
Chen and He Kexin were the latest champions to lose their crowns, with Chen narrowly edged by Brazil's Arthur Zanetti in the men's rings final and He beaten by Russia's Aliya Mustafina on the uneven bars.
Chen kissed the apparatus after completing his routine and later revealed that it was a farewell kiss, bringing down the curtain on a career that has also seen him win eight World Championship golds and four Asian Games titles.
"I think there are more brilliant people coming out of China, younger and greater," he explained.
"There are many young athletes, and I'm sure they will have better results. I'm sure after my retirement there will be more champions to come out of China."
Chen said he had been surprised to see Zanetti win gold, describing the Brazilian's landing as "not great", but he said he felt that he had improved personally since his rings triumph four years ago.
"Today, compared to Beijing, I think I was better," he said.
"Psychologically and physically, I was well prepared. I was very familiar with my routine. I thought I performed better."
Like Chen, He was also the first gymnast to take to the floor in her event final, but she, too, had to suffer the agony of seeing her score bettered by a rival.
He finished with a score of 15.933, which was 0.200 points below Mustafina, but she said she was pleased by her performance.
"I'm quite happy and satisfied. I think I did what I could," she said.
"Physically I have trained myself to be very, very familiar with the routine. I mastered every move."
China's disappointment contrasted starkly with South Korea's joy at seeing Yang Hak-Seon claim the country's first ever Olympic gymnastics gold by triumphing in the men's vault final.
Yang finished above Russia's Denis Ablyazin and Igor Radivilov of Ukraine, and said he hoped to inspire Korean youngsters to seek to emulate his success.
"Korea's aim is to be in the top 10 in the total medal chart and I'm happy to contribute to that," said the 19-year-old, whose signature vault is a triple-twisting front somersault that bears his name.
"Gymnastics is not a very popular sport in Korea. But rather than trying to inspire people who are training at the moment, I'd like to inspire people who are a bit younger than me to have a go."

Accidents Happen: Managing Risk in Travel and Wilderness Programs
Workshop Description:
Whether it?s an outdoor trip to the backcountry, a service trip to Belize, or an urban trip to NYC, there are a wide array of experiences that come with their own array of risks. Experiential education standards as well as best practices in managing risk have developed and evolved, and offering and running these experiences cannot be ?business as usual.? The further afield you go, the greater the risk horizon. This fast-paced session will cover fundamental principles and best practices of managing risk in experiential programming including inherent risk, documentation, medical management, transportation, and will address mental health risks.
Describe your role in experiential education:
My role in experiential education is long and broad?early in my career I used experiential methods to teach religion in the classroom.? As a middle and high school teacher I also coached sports and took students hiking and backpacking.? In the summers I worked in summer camps as a counselor and administrator ? a role I continue today ? leading young people of all ages and abilities into the wilderness, mostly in the Colorado Rockies.? All of those roles have evolved into a career in risk management in which I now run my own consulting business, working with camps and schools to review and build risk management plans for their experiential programming.? I serve the American Camp Association on the National Standards Commission, the AEE as an accreditation reviewer, and I lead treks in Nepal for Kamzang Journeys.? I consider my main role in experiential education is as a teacher and educator, and I regularly speak at conferences around the country.
How long have you been involved with AEE?
I have been involved with AEE since 1997.
What have you most enjoyed about being an AEE member?
I have enjoyed the challenging and often passionate discourse addressing what can be considered ?experiential education.?? I have learned a great deal in this ongoing discussion alone.? I have also benefited a great deal from getting to know other experiential professionals and understanding industry standards through the accreditation program.
What can we expect from your workshop at this year?s 40th Annual International Conference?
My workshop will be a fast-paced overview of important risk management principles and practices for international, domestic, and wilderness travel programs. There will be lots of great information which will very possibly cause you to say, ?I had no idea!?? You won?t want to miss it!

PORT ROYAL, Jamaica (AP) ? Tropical Storm Ernesto brushed past the Caribbean country's southern coast Sunday, causing heavy rains but few problems as it took a course expected to carry it by Honduras and across the Yucatan Peninsula into the Gulf of Mexico.
Forecasters at Jamaica's Meteorological Service said rain had tapered off by Sunday evening although light to moderate showers from squalls were still reported across most of the island, especially eastern areas.
In Jamaica's southern capital of Kingston, Ernesto dumped some rain but left no noticeable damage.
Island authorities urged people in flood-prone areas to stay on alert and urged fishermen on outlying cays and banks to remain in safe harbors on the main island.
As the storm's outer bands approached earlier, Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller called on all Jamaicans to make the necessary preparations to ensure their safety.
"I urge you to especially consider the children, the sick, persons with disabilities, the elderly, and the most vulnerable in the society," she said.
Daniel Edwards, a dreadlocked fisherman in Port Royal, a small fishing village at the tip of a spit of land near Kingston's airport, said vigorous lightning lit up the sky over the sea late Saturday and early Sunday.
Bailing out his small wooden fishing boat next to a dilapidated wooden dock, Edwards said he wasn't overly concerned by the storm.
"It's not much of a muchness," said the veteran fisherman, decked out in rain gear.
Forecasters said Ernesto could begin drenching the coast of Honduras on Monday. It is then expected to strengthen, possibly becoming a weak hurricane, before moving ashore near the Belize-Mexico border Tuesday night and passing into the Gulf of Mexico.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Ernesto had become a bit more organized as it moved away from Jamaica and its forward movement had slowed some.
A tropical storm watch was in effect for the coast of Honduras, from the border with Nicaragua westward to Punta Castilla, and the main island of Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands.
A Cayman government statement urged Grand Cayman residents to monitor the storm but said the storm was not likely to have serious effects on the British Caribbean territory.
The U.S. hurricane center said Ernesto was centered about 235 miles (375 kilometers) east of Cabo Gracias a Dios on the Nicaragua-Honduras border late Sunday. It had maximum sustained winds near 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving westward at 15 mph (24 kph).
Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Florence, which formed far out in the Atlantic, stopped strengthening by early Sunday and was no longer expected to gain strength, the hurricane center said.
Florence's top sustained winds had slowed further to 40 mph (65 kph) by late Sunday and it was 925 miles (1,485 kilometers) west of the Cape Verde Islands. Forecasters said a gradual weakening was expected and the storm was likely to become just a tropical depression on Monday.
