China's next manned space mission to launch this summer

BEIJING | Thu Feb 28, 2013 3:04am EST

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's next manned space mission will launch sometime between June and August, carrying three astronauts to an experimental space module, state media said on Thursday, the latest part of an ambitious plan to build a space station.

The Shenzhou 10 and its crew will launch from a remote site in the Gobi desert and then link up with the Tiangong (Heavenly Palace) 1 module, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese astronauts carried out a manned docking with the module for the first time last June.

Rendezvous and docking exercises between the two vessels are an important hurdle in China's efforts to acquire the technological and logistical skills to run a full space lab that can house astronauts for long periods.

China is still far from catching up with the established space superpowers, the United States and Russia. The Tiangong 1 is a trial module, not the building block of a space station.

But this summer's mission will be the latest show of China's growing prowess in space and comes while budget restraints and shifting priorities have held back U.S. manned space launches.

It will be China's fifth manned space mission since 2003 when astronaut Yang Liwei became the country's first person in orbit.

China also plans an unmanned moon landing and deployment of a moon rover. Scientists have raised the possibility of sending a man to the moon, but not before 2020.

Bernanke defends Fed's low-interest-rate policies

(AP) ? Facing criticism from Republican lawmakers, Chairman Ben Bernanke stood behind the Federal Reserve's low-interest-rate policies Wednesday and sought to reassure members of Congress that the central bank has a handle on the risks.

In his second day of testimony on Capitol Hill, Bernanke told members of the House Financial Services Committee that the bond purchases are needed to boost a still-weak economy and that they have helped create jobs for average Americans.

The bond purchases are intended to lower long-term interest rates. That encourages more borrowing and spending, which generates growth.

Still, Republicans said the bond purchases could generate higher inflation.

"We have gone too far in monetary policy and the monetary easing and it is in this member's opinion time to pull back," said Rep. Gary Miller, R-Calif.

Bernanke said the Fed is weighing the costs and the benefits.

"We plan to have a continual discussion and review of both the costs and the benefits and try to make sure that we are taking the right steps given those costs and benefits," Bernanke told the House panel.

Bernanke's remarks during his semiannual monetary report to Congress largely repeated comments made a day earlier to a Senate panel.

The Fed chairman made clear that the Fed's low-interest-rate policies are giving crucial support to an economy still burdened by high unemployment. He also acknowledged the risks of keeping rates low indefinitely. But he expressed confidence that such risks pose little threat now and gave no signal that the Fed might shift away from those policies.

The aggressive program to buy $85 billion a month in Treasurys and mortgage bonds had kept borrowing costs low, he said. And that, in turn, has helped strengthen sectors such as housing and autos, he said.

Bernanke rejected a suggestion by Rep. John Campbell, R-Calif., that the Fed's policies were mainly helping the federal government with its borrowing needs and big banks and foreign governments.

"This is very much focused at the average American citizen," Bernanke said. "Our estimates are that we've helped create many private-sector jobs. ... People are able to buy houses at very low mortgage rates, refinancing at low mortgage rates. People are able to get car loans at low rates."

The low borrowing rates have boosted demand, Bernanke said, and that has helped to lift home prices, making home owners feel more financially secure.

"In a lot of dimensions, we have, I think, benefited Main Street and that's certainly our objective," Bernanke said.

Senate clears the way for confirmation of Hagel

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate cleared the way Tuesday for confirmation of Chuck Hagel to be the nation's next defense secretary after Republicans dropped their unprecedented delay of President Barack Obama's choice to head the Pentagon.

On a vote of 71-27, the Senate ended a Republican filibuster, setting the stage for the widely expected confirmation of the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska later in the day. Eighteen Republicans joined 51 Democrats and two independents to move forward with the contentious nomination.

If confirmed, Hagel would succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and join Obama's retooled national security team of Secretary of State John Kerry and CIA Director-designate John Brennan.

Hagel's nomination bitterly split the Senate, with Republicans turning on their former GOP colleague and Democrats standing by Obama's nominee.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid asked what the filibuster had done for "my Republican colleagues."

"Twelve days later, nothing. Nothing has changed," the Nevada Democrat said on the Senate floor. "Sen. Hagel's exemplary record of service to his country remains untarnished."

Reid blamed partisanship over Obama's choice for the delay. Both Reid and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., warned that it was imperative to act just days before automatic, across-the-board budget cuts hit the Pentagon.

"The Pentagon needs a seasoned leader to implement those cuts," Reid said.

Republicans argued that while Hagel served with distinction in Vietnam ? Sen. Jim Inhofe called him a "hero" ? his record on Israel, Iran and nuclear weapons disqualified him for the top Pentagon job. Last week, 15 Republican senators sent a letter to Obama asking him to withdraw the Hagel nomination.

Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., cited Hagel's at-times halting testimony at his confirmation hearing and his misstatement that the U.S. has a policy of containment toward Iran rather than thwarting Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"He has an embarrassing lack of knowledge about our policy toward Iran," Coats said.

In the course of the rancorous, seven-week nomination fight, Republicans, led by freshman Sen. Ted Cruz and Inhofe, have insinuated that Hagel has a cozy relationship with Iran and received payments for speeches from extreme or radical groups. Those comments have drawn a rebuke from Democrats and some Republicans.

Levin dismissed the "unfair innuendoes" against Hagel and called him an "outstanding American patriot" whose background as an enlisted soldier would send a positive message to the nation's servicemen and women.

The president got no points with the GOP for tapping the former two-term senator. Republican lawmakers excoriated Hagel, calling him too critical of Israel and too compromising with Iran. They cast the Nebraskan as a radical far out of the mainstream.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., clashed with his onetime friend over his opposition to President George W. Bush's decision to send an extra 30,000 troops to Iraq in 2007 at a point when the war seemed in danger of being lost. Hagel, who voted to authorize military force in Iraq, later opposed the conflict, comparing it to Vietnam and arguing that it shifted the focus from Afghanistan.

McCain called Hagel unqualified for the Pentagon job even though he once described him as fit for a Cabinet post.

Republicans also challenged Hagel about a May 2012 study that he co-authored for the advocacy group Global Zero, which called for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons and the eventual elimination of all the world's nuclear arms.

The group argued that with the Cold War over, the United States could reduce its total nuclear arsenal to 900 without sacrificing security. Currently, the U.S. and Russia have about 5,000 warheads each, either deployed or in reserve. Both countries are on track to reduce their deployed strategic warheads to 1,550 by 2018, the number set in the New START treaty that the Senate ratified in December 2010.

In an echo of the 2012 presidential campaign, Hagel faced an onslaught of criticism by well-funded, Republican-leaning outside groups that labeled the former senator "anti-Israel" and pressured senators to oppose the nomination. The groups ran television and print ads criticizing Hagel.

Opponents were particularly incensed by Hagel's use of the term "Jewish lobby" to refer to pro-Israel groups. He apologized, saying he should have used another term and should not have said those groups have intimidated members of the Senate into favoring actions contrary to U.S. interests.

The nominee spent weeks reaching out to members of the Senate, meeting individually with lawmakers to address their concerns and seeking to reassure them about his policies.

Hagel's inconsistent performance during some eight hours of testimony at this confirmation hearing last month undercut his cause, but it wasn't a fatal blow.

On Feb. 12, a divided Senate Armed Services Committee approved the nomination on a party-line vote of 14-11.

Two days later, a Democratic move to vote on the nomination fell a few votes short as Republicans insisted they needed more time to consider the Hagel pick. The nomination also became entangled in Republican demands for more information about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya last September.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in that attack.

On the vote, two Democrats did not vote ? Mark Udall of Colorado and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

Telit expands Qualcomm-based portfolio with LTE Concept product ...

Mobile World Congress, Barcelona, Spain. February 25, 2013 ? Telit Wireless Solutions today announced the expansion of its long-standing relationship with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. At the same time it is expanding its mobile computing offerings with Intel?

The collaboration with Qualcomm is marked by the introduction of a 4G LTE product and the development of variants for the company?s top selling 3G modules in the xE910 product family.

The complete portfolio allows the global vendor of machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, to offer form factor-compatible Qualcomm Technologies-based solutions for CDMA, UMTS and LTE radio technologies to address the communications needs of M2M and Internet of Everything (IoE) application developers.

The LE910, based on Qualcomm Technologies? GobiTM MDM9215, will be Telit?s first LTE module delivered in the xE910 product family, and the company?s second LTE offering, following the LE920 LTE automotive-grade module announced last year, also based on the MDM9215.

In January 2013, Telit introduced two new xE910 modules?the HSDPA UE910 V2 based on Qualcomm Technologies? QSC6270-Turbo chipset and HSPA+ HE910 V2 based on Qualcomm Technologies? MDM6200 chipset?to address the growing demand for 3G solutions. Variants of both products with support for Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 are being planned. With the LE910, the xE910 product family is now poised to address not only the 2G to 3G migration, but also the growing set of opportunities and applications that require LTE.

The Qualcomm Technologies? chipsets have enabled Telit to build the xE910 family to provide interchangeability between 3GPP2?CDMA (1xRTT, EV-DO) and 3GPP?UMTS (HSDPA, HSPA+) and LTE variants, making the adaptation of customer applications to regional technical requirements quick and easy while minimizing time to market and total cost of ownership.

Visitors to the Telit booth at Mobile World Congress (Hall 5, G70) can glean the breadth of the product portfolio at the ?Qualcomm Technologies Corner?, including existing and prototype products and their respective chipsets. Included in the display will be the LE910 product concept and a number of commercially available and prototype modules for the automotive industry.

?The increased scope of our relationship with Qualcomm comes at an exciting time, when we are seeing strong demand from the M2M market for our products and solutions,? said Oozi Cats, CEO of Telit. ?By expanding our portfolio with products such as the LE910 module we can address the 3G and 4G market which were previously beyond our reach.?

?We are pleased to work with Telit to bring 4G LTE to the CDMA, HSPA and HSPA+ platforms based on certain Qualcomm Technologies? chipsets,? said Nakul Duggal, vice president of product management, new markets, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. ?Qualcomm Technologies has an extensive 3G and 4G LTE chipset portfolio, helping Telit deliver solutions in various product tiers to address the myriad of technical and regional needs of M2M and IoE developers.?

Telit has been a one-stop-shop for the M2M community for more than a decade, leveraging a broad portfolio of hardware in cellular, short range and positioning technologies, artfully complemented by services and connectivity from m2mAIR. By applying products and services in synergizing bundles, delivered with global support and logistics matching each individual need or want, Telit aims to help eliminate technical risk, shortening time to market to the Internet of Everything.

Telit to expand its mobile computing offerings through collaboration with Intel?

Telit has also used Mobile World Congress to announce the introduction of a family of new data cards in the new M.2, Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF). The data cards augment the company?s mobile computing product line currently comprised of mPCIe modules in HSPA+ and 1xEvDO cellular technologies. The new data cards are to be based on Intel?s designs for LTE/DC-HSPA+ and HSPA+. They target not only new always-connected consumer and leading edge adopter applications such as Ultrabook?, laptops, tablets, but also commercial and industrial devices, as the current favored mPCIe form factor gets gradually replaced by M.2.

Telit has since 2002, applied Intel chipsets in many of its M2M modules but starting in September 2012 the two companies agreed to design and market data card products, to keep pace with growing global demand for mobile broadband solutions. Telit?s new M.2 lineup will include LN930 and HN930 product families conceived to address both global, regional, and speed requirements from cutting edge LTE/DC-HSPA+ and HSPA+ applications in mobile computing and gadgets. The Intel-based LTE products are set to deliver speeds up to 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up; Dual Carrier HSPA+ 42 Mbps down and 11.5 Mbps up; and HSPA+ 21 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up.

The sub-compact and ultra slim 30x42mm M.2 data cards include global satellite (and assisted) positioning technology and certified drivers for Windows?7 & 8. They also feature the industry?s new Firmware Switching standard enabling the host Operating System and drivers to switch the card?s firmware to the latest and specific cellular network approved revision, thus overcoming a long-standing complexity hurdle in provisioning cellular connectivity devices in non-operator branded consumer products. The switching is triggered by the simple insertion of the consumer or operator supplied SIM card into the PC?s SIM card slot.

The new data cards interface to the host computer or gadget through a USB 3.0 connection supporting selective suspend (SS) and link power management (LPM). The SS feature allows the device driver to turn off (standby) the data card when it goes idle. When the card is again active or required, the system wakes it and resumes normal operation. Both SS and LPM are critical for latest generation battery powered consumer devices such as the Ultrabook?, conceived to ensure the user can reap several hours of use before a battery recharge is needed. The data cards employ these and other power-saving standards and policies to enhance the user experience of the host device.

Telit?s industrialisation plans call for start of samples programme in Q2 and commercial availability in Q3 2013. To accelerate time to market for the PC OEMS, Intel has validated M.2 cards for use with the Intel Tablet and Ultrabook? reference designs.

?Intel is pleased to be working with Telit to bring to market highly competitive modules offering worldwide coverage, high performance, and an optimised user experience,? said Horst Pratsch, head of Product Line Modules & M2M at Intel Corporation. ?Telit 3G and 4G M.2 modules take advantage of Intel?s experience in ramping cellular technology globally in industry leading smartphone devices, along with integration, validation, and optimisation in Intel computing platforms.?

?Until recently, a large cellular infrastructure equipment vendor held a 50% market share in the data card market used in mobile computing, primarily with the mPCIe format. However, this supplier has exited the market representing a potentially disruptive development in the supply chain,? said Oozi Cats, Telit?s CEO. ?Telit is perfectly positioned to step in to fill the gap given the high confidence level we enjoy with our customers, particularly OEMs with respect to long-term, high-volume supply as well as our strong global and local support structure.?

Ten years on, leveraging the industry?s broadest portfolio of hardware in cellular, short range and positioning technologies, is complemented by services and connectivity from m2mAIR. By applying products and services in bundles, delivered with global support and logistics matching each individual need or want, Telit intends to eliminate technical risk, thereby shortening time-to-market (TTM) to the Internet of Things, whichever industry or segment you come from.

BlackBerry launches the Z10 in India for $800

BlackBerry launches the Z10 in India for a cool $800

The BB10-toting BlackBerry Z10 has just been unveiled in India, priced at Rs 43,490 ($800) for an unlocked unit. Coinciding with the announcement, the BlackBerry Music Store has also gone live in the country starting today, offering a mix of local and international music. Support for local languages aside, the app offerings have also been given an Indian flavor with the inclusion of country-specific goodies spanning various genres including news, banking, travel, entertainment and lifestyle. The subcontinent is quite important for the company formerly known as RIM, and its devices are still popular in the region, despite taking a beating in market share recently (see coverage), courtesy the BBM service that makes them the go-to smartphones for those hooked on to the instant messaging platform. However, the Z10's sticker price puts it in the same league as the 16GB iPhone 5 and HTC's full-HD Butterfly (both costing roughly $50 more), and it remains to be seen how the price-sensitive Indian market will react to the new entrant.

PowerbyProxi debuts wireless charging solution, aims to fully integrate it into future smartphones (video)

PowerbyProxi debuts wireless charging solution, aims to fully integrate it into future smartphones video

The pathway to innovation is paved with failed attempts to produce wireless charging solutions that a) actually work and b) people genuinely want to use, but we've got yet another upstart here at Mobile World Congress willing to give it a go. PowerbyProxi's solution looks pretty similar to renditions we've seen from Fulton Innovation, but it's quick to point out the differences. The loosely-coupled method uses a bantam receiver that's "efficient enough to be integrated into the processor board of a smartphone without causing over-heating."

While previous industry designs have resulted in longer charging times than if the device were plugged into a wall socket, PowerbyProxi's solution reportedly "provides charging at the same speed as wired charging." In fact, it claims to offer the only system that can rejuvenate up to three devices at the same time at full power. If you're wondering what working group these guys are going to side with, that much is still up in the air -- it's remaining "agnostic towards the selection of an ultimate standard" for now.

We spoke with the company here at Mobile World Congress, and it confirmed to us that it's working with the top five major battery manufacturers, and we should see wireless AA and AAA cells "within 12 months." It wouldn't confirm how soon we'd see it in phones, tablets or laptops (yeah, it'll work in all of 'em), but it's clearly working with some of the top OEMs and hoping for the best. In the demo we witnessed, specially equipped Galaxy S III handsets charged alongside one another, even when barely clinging to the charging pad. Despite a bunch of metallic objects being heaped on the pad, it was intelligent enough to only send power to the phones, keeping gum boxes and coins cool, calm and collected. Head on past the break for quick video tour as well as a press release.

Dana Murph contributed to this report.

Egypt's Morsi calls for dialogue on elections

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist president has invited political forces to join him in a dialogue to find ways to ensure the "integrity and transparency" of upcoming parliamentary elections.

Speaking in a television interview, Mohammed Morsi also rejected opposition charges that the elections he called for April were ill timed given the wave of unrest roiling the country.

"I see that the climate is very agreeable for an election," he said.

Morsi used the interview, recorded on Sunday but aired early Monday 5 ? hours behind schedule, to try and improve his standing nearly eight months into his four-year term.

He repeatedly declared that he was a "president for all Egyptians," claimed he had no quarrel with any of the nation's political forces and reasserted his respect and confidence in the military.

Sony Hints at Pricing for PS4 Games

The prices of new games designed for the new Sony PlayStation 4 may be no more expensive (and in some cases cheaper) than those for the current console, the PlayStation 3, according to Jack Tretton.?

Tretton, the chief executive for Sony Computer Entertainment America, told CNBC: "I think people are willing to pay if they see value there and I think there are more choices than ever before for consumers. We're going to welcome free-to-play models; games from 99 cents up to those $60 games."

This should come as good news, considering Sony jumped from $50 (approximately ?33) for PlayStation 2 games to $60 (approximately ?40) for PS3 titles.

"But if you really see where the heat is for the true gamer on the console it's still that big-form experience that typically runs upwards of $50 million (?33 million) to develop and will justify that $60 price point and will give people hours and hours of gameplay on a daily basis for months and years to come," Tretton added.

The Sony executive's comments suggest, on the face of matters, that gamers will not be asked to pay, on average, more than they have so far. However, Kotaku's report quotes inflation figures from the US' Department of Labour, which suggests that the adjusted price of PlayStation games, in 2013, ought to be $68.54 (approximately ?45).

Whether or not developers do opt to hike prices, it is interesting to note the hypothetical increase in prices ($8.54) is close to the $10 hike from the PS2 to the PS3.

Smartphone Gamers?

Meanwhile, Tretton was also asked about the possible impact of cheap smartphones on the gaming industry and if these could be an alternative to increasingly expensive gaming consoles. ?

"They (games on tablets) demystify gaming; they bring people in with a bite-sized gaming experience. But ultimately, I think people migrate up the food chain. Conversely, if you're somebody who consider themselves to be a true gamer and wants to play the most powerful devices and the most deep and rich gaming experiences, you're not going to find yourself migrating down the food chain other than to maybe kill some time or to complement that core gaming experience," Tretton said.

Oil prices recover

Oil prices have recovered slightly, after two days of losses stoked by concerns that prices had outrun weak growth in demand.

New York's main contract, WTI crude for April, gained 29 cents to $US93.13 a barrel on Friday.

In London, Brent North Sea crude for April delivery finished at $114.10 a barrel up 57 cents from Thursday.

The modest rebound came after New York prices fell more that $4.50 a barrel over the past two days.

"We had a dramatic selloff this week and we are just seeing some short-covering, some profit-taking," said John Kilduff of Again Capital, adding that $93 "seems to be the new support level."

Jason Hughes, head of premium client management at IG Markets in Singapore, said it was "possible that we do have the bargain hunters looking to pick up oil at these levels".

Traders brushed off more data showing a prolonged recession in the eurozone, getting instead encouragement from a rise in German business confidence, said analysts.

"With the equity markets focused more on German business confidence than downward revisions to eurozone economic forecasts, the petroleum markets are seeing at least a limited bounce after the Wednesday-Thursday drop," said Tim Evans at Citi Futures.

"The height of the bounce - whether today or into next week - will provide an indication of whether oil market bullish sentiment is resilient or whether further urgent long liquidation is on tap."

Back with a bang! Ashwin's display of exemplary bowling technique on Day 1 restored Team India's confidence

His talent was never in question, but his application was. And on Friday, R Ashwin showed that during the gap between the ODI series against England and the start of the Test series against Australia, he sweated it out, not only working on his line and length, but also on his variation. Live Commentary: Day 2

The result was there for everyone to see. For someone who picked just 14 wickets in four Tests against England, Ashwin has already scalped six of the seven Australian first innings wickets to fall on the opening day of the first Test. Scorecard

R Ashwin (right) celebrates after dismissing Australia's Ed Cowan.

And at one point, he had taken all the six Australian wickets that had fallen, before Ravindra Jadeja joined him to pick the wicket of Mitchell Starc. 5 most famous India wins over Australia

Speaking to Mail Today, legendary India spinner Erapalli Prasanna said that the basic difference that Ashwin has brought about in his bowling is that the off-spinner is eager to make the batsman play rather than rush through his overs.

"During the series against England, he looked more of a bowler looking to wait for the batsmen to make mistakes rather than deceiving them with his flight and penetration. That way you can succeed only in T20 cricket as the batsmen are bound to go after you. 5 ugliest India-Aussie cricket moments

?"But it is heartening to see that he has learnt from his mistakes. If you take a close look at his line and length today, he has not only made the batsmen play more but has also used the flight to good effect - as seen in Ed Cowan's dismissal," he said. Another thing that impressed Prasanna was the way Ashwin used the quicker delivery.

"Against England, he looked more eager to use the quicker delivery as his stock delivery rather than using it as a surprise ball. Every two deliveries, he would come in and bowl the quicker one. But today, it was clear that he was thinking and strategising every single delivery in his mind. He used the quicker one only when he was sure that the batsmen wouldn't be expecting it," he said.

Former India spinner Maninder Singh echoed Prasanna's sentiments. "It was good to see that Ashwin actually used the quicker delivery to surprise the batsmen and not use it as his stock delivery - unlike in the series against England."Also, I think he bowled in good rhythm post lunch. Sometimes you get wickets and sometimes you don't. But it is important to find your rhythm. It has never been a question of him lacking talent. It was all about getting his head down and concentrating on his strength and he did that today," he told Mail Today

But Maninder Singh warned that even on Friday, Ashwin looked to be itching to try out a few variations towards the end and the off-spinner needed to stop himself from doing that.

"Even today he looked eager to try a few variations, but he needs to stop that. He bowled an immaculate line and length and should just stick to it," he said.

(AP) ? Just in case the message isn't getting through, the Miami Heat are more than happy to repeat it. The championship still is in their hands and good luck trying to pry it away.

The Heat won their season-high ninth straight Thursday night with an 86-67 win over the Chicago Bulls behind LeBron James' 26 points, and supplied more evidence that they're ready to put away the rest of the Eastern Conference.

More important, they're looking like a team that's poised to defend their championship.

"We all had a vision of how this team was going to really operate together, but there is no limit," Chris Bosh said. "We can continue to get better. We can continue to play better together. Our defense can continue to improve. If we want to win in the postseason, it's going to have to."

They sure are looking good at the moment. They blew out Oklahoma City on the road before the All-Star break and followed it up with a win at Atlanta on Wednesday before taking out the Bulls.

James also had 12 rebounds and seven assists in another big performance after ending his franchise-record seven-game streak of scoring at least 30 the previous night.

Dwyane Wade added 17 points, and the Heat took control in the first half, sending the Bulls to their fifth loss in seven games on a night when the Derrick Rose recovery story took another twist.

After saying last week that he wouldn't rush back from his knee injury to play this season if he wasn't ready, Chicago's sidelined superstar had to go into damage control mode after his older brother Reggie blasted the organization in an ESPNChicago.com article for not making a move before Thursday's trade deadline.

Things didn't get much better for the Bulls once the game started. They set a season low for points while committing a season-high 27 turnovers, the most for the Bulls since they had 29 against Washington on Dec. 4, 2004.

"We're putting together some good basketball right now," James said. "We're defending. We're creating turnovers. We're winning the turnover game offensively. We're the best shooting team in the league ... so if we don't turn the ball over, we get good shots at the rim, we could also have a good chance to win."

Nate Robinson scored 14 points for Chicago but also committed five fouls with Kirk Hinrich sitting out because of ongoing trouble with his right elbow. That explains some of the Bulls' problems hanging onto the ball, although general sloppiness and Miami's athleticism certainly played a role.

Carlos Boozer had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Joakim Noah added 11 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but he also had four turnovers.

Chicago was particularly bad in the first half, coughing it up 17 times as the Heat built a 45-35 lead, and the Bulls came up short after winning at Miami last month. This time, the Heat took control in the second quarter, scoring 13 straight points during a 4 1/2-minute stretch to turn a two-point deficit into an 11-point advantage even though James was on the bench for much of the run.

It started after a soaring right-handed dunk by Taj Gibson to give Chicago a 28-26 lead with 8:16 remaining. Allen answered with a driving layup, Wade followed with two jumpers and the Bulls turned it over five times as the Heat built a 39-28 lead.

Marco Belinelli ended the scoring drought for Chicago with a free throw, and Boozer then nailed a jumper after Bosh buried a 20-footer. But it was a rough night all around for Chicago, even before the Bulls took to the court.

Rose, recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, found himself at the center of attention after his brother went off, and he wound up releasing this statement in response: "I have always felt that the Bulls organization's goals have been the same as mine and that is to bring another championship to this city."

That comment came after Reggie Rose ripped the Bulls, telling ESPNChicago.com they don't have the talent to compete for a championship and that their decision to stand pat before the trade deadline could be a "big factor" in whether Derrick plays at all this season.

"It's frustrating to see my brother play his heart and soul out for the team and them not put anything around him," said Reggie Rose, Derrick's manager.

Coach Tom Thibodeau brushed off his comments, saying they're "no big deal.

"We all want the same things," he added. "We want Derrick's health. Obviously we're trying to pursue a championship. We share that in common."

NOTES: Hinrich sat out because of soreness in his right elbow. The veteran Hinrich missed seven games with an infection in the elbow before delivering 10 assists Tuesday in a win at New Orleans. The Bulls visit Charlotte on Friday, and Thibodeau expects him to make the trip. ... The Heat traded backup center Dexter Pittman and a second-round pick in this year's draft to the Grizzlies on Thursday for the rights to center Ricky Sanchez. ... Mike Miller remained in Miami because of ear problems resulting from a head cold. He also missed Wednesday's game at Atlanta but could be available in Saturday at Philadelphia.

Part car, part projector: Illuminating Audi's futuristic lighting ...

While most of the automotive technology we cover resides inside a car, there is a whole host of tech on the forward and aft of the cabin that most of us spend a considerable ?amount of time staring at, and very little time appreciating. We?re referring of course to lighting technology, and in this space, no company has applied technology more liberally than Audi.

The German company employees dozens of state-of-the-art lighting technologies, including some that haven?t made it past prototypes or onto roads in the United States yet. Here?s a closer look at how they work, why they?re integral to future automotive design, and when you can expect to see them lighting up that next dark country road.

Adaptive headlights

Adaptive headlights are becoming commonplace in today?s automotive marketplace. Audi?s adaptive headlights are a bit more complex than some of its competitors, which simply swivel with the turning of the steering wheel.

Audi adaptive headlights not only swivel up to 15 degrees but also adjust based upon various vehicle parameters. Audi?s vehicle lighting computer looks at road speed, steering angle, and yaw rate to adjust the aim of the headlights accordingly. These lighting changes can seem undetectable to the driver but can significantly increase road visibility.

?Audi advanced lighting tech

Additionally, Audi?s adaptive headlights use a forward facing video camera to read not only oncoming headlights but also the taillights of vehicles on the road. The lighting computer will adjust the headlight range to optimize for the driver?s forward visibility while simultaneously limiting the effect on other drivers.

Distinguishing its adaptive headlight system from the rest of the industry further, the Audi MMI infotainment system will send satellite navigation information to the lighting computer as well. The lighting computer will again adjust lighting based upon the type of roadway, reacting differently when driving onto an onramp, on a curvy section of road, or even for left or right-hand driving, should a driver go from, say, France into England.

LED headlights

Audi?s LED headlights, which are separate from its LED daytime running lights, are available on models ranging from its high-performance R8 supercar down to one of its entry-level models, the A3.

LED headlights are beneficial for drivers for several reasons. Firstly, LED headlights are low maintenance and are designed to last the life of the vehicle. Secondly, they produce light with a color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin, which resembles daylight. This makes LED headlights much less tiring for the eyes. Additionally, LEDs consume five percent less energy than high-efficiency Xenon bulbs.

Audi LED lights

Currently Audi uses varying sizes and levels of intensity in its LED lighting technology. The daytime running LED system is comprised of 22 white LEDs and 22 yellow. On the A8 for example, only 10 lens modules are used for the low-beam headlights. The high-beam headlights, or ?brights,? however, only require two four-chip LEDs that are intensified with a free-form reflection system.

Matrix Beam

Audi Matrix LED headlights, or ?Matrix Beam? as Audi refers to it, are the future of headlight technology. Matrix Beam, though, is not currently legal in the US, but we?ll get to that in a minute.

Matrix Beam uses dozens of individual lighting segments, projected forward by lenses and reflectors. Depending on the situation, these segments can be dimmed or simply turned off. This, for instance, allows the light appear to be swiveling without requiring a mechanism to do so. The inside or outside segments simply dim, shifting the focus point to one side or the other.

Matrix Beam Demo

Much like the adaptive headlights mentioned above, Matrix Beam takes into account satellite navigation location, as well as onboard video camera images to adjust lighting. The system is so precise, however, ?that Matrix Beam is capable of illuminating ?the areas between several vehicles in complex situations,? according to an Audi press release, which is demonstrated in the photo in the above photo gallery with the man holding a flashlight and two beams of light on either side of him.

Matrix Beam is not yet legal in the US simply because the headlight regulations were, according to an Audi spokesman, ?written long before software and sophisticated sensors were considered important elements of automotive lighting.? Audi is working alongside regulators to interpret these laws in order to allow Matrix Beam on future Audi cars bound for the States.

Laser taillights

Audi Laser TaillightsIt?s not as scary as it sounds. Essentially, the system consists of a laser diode that projects a line on the pavement behind the Audi, indicating a safe stopping distance for the vehicle following it. We were concerned this might be too unusual, jarring, or distracting for drivers, but an Audi spokesman assured us that Audi is ?not about to advance technologies that would make distractions or safety worse, and regulators won?t permit it if that?s the case.?

An additional benefit of laser taillights is that in foggy conditions, the laser beam strikes the water droplets in the air, making them visible. The laser line is then seen as a large warning triangle.

OLED technology

OLED stands for ?organic light emitting diode.? These lights are made from organic materials, unlike LEDs, which are made from semiconductor crystals. OLED material can be used on all parts of the vehicle for both safety lighting and non-essential visual detail. OLED is both versatile and extremely lightweight, making it ideal for future high-efficiency designs.

Audi Swarm Lights

Audi recently showed a video (located below) of an OLED lighting concept called ?The Swarm? where the entire back of the vehicle was coated in OLEDs and simulates taillights and turn signal indicators.

In addition to simple lighting, Audi imagines future OLEDs could be used on vehicle bodylines as well. Lighting up as the vehicle nears another car in the dark or ?illuminating features such as door handles.

Lastly, AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) have already been used by Audi as a stunning weight-saving technology in its R18 e-Tron Quattro electric racecar. Audi used an AMOLED screen to replace the review mirror as the R18 has no rear porthole.

Tunisia's outgoing PM apologizes to Tunisian people

Tunis (Reuters) - Tunisia's outgoing prime minister Hamadi Jebali apologized on Thursday to the Tunisian people and urged them to unite to pull the country out of its political crisis.

Jebali, head of government for 14 months, has refused to lead the next administration and his Islamist Ennahda party says it will soon name a replacement.

Jebali, secretary-general of Ennahda, resigned on Tuesday after his plan for an apolitical technocrat cabinet to prepare for elections collapsed, largely because of opposition from within his party and its leader Rached Ghannouchi.

"I apologies to the people of Tunisia because I failed and disappointed them," Jabali said in a televised speech to the nation.

But he said he was "optimistic that consensus will win and the revolution will win".

The assassination of secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid on February 6 plunged Tunisia into its worst political crisis since the uprising that inspired a wave of Arab revolts two years ago.

The killing sent protesters flooding into the streets, exposing the deep rifts between the Islamists in power and their liberal and secular-minded opponents.

Jebali called on politicians, trade unionists and journalists to rally around the interests of the country.

"Tunisians must be patient during the coming months," he said. "Demands and sit-ins must stop until the revolution wins."

PSA: URLs in tweets now eat a couple more characters

PSA: URLs in tweets now eat a couple more characters

The dreaded day is upon us, as Twitter has followed through with its plan to increase the maximum length of t.co wrapped links. So, from now on, you've got a few less characters to play with if you want to share an URL with the world: links of the http kind now take up 22 characters instead of 20, and https links hog 23 characters instead of 21. Forget the "t.co wrapped" part -- the reduction comes into force when any URL is included in a tweet, and you can't trick it with shortened links from sites like Bit.ly, so u'll jus need 2b a lil more concise. Even Neo can't mess with the laws of the Twitter.
